SHORT COURSES

SARB has on several occasions organized and  presented the two short courses " Environmental Geochemistry of Ore deposits and Mining Activities", and Geochemistry and Hydrology of Tailings and waste rocks".

The first course includes topics of Ore Genesis, Mine Waste Management, Acid Rock Drainage, Sampling Methods, Analytical Procedures, Geochemical Modeling, and Remediation. These classes have been given to consultants, regulators, and mining professional as in-house classes in New Mexico, California, Minnesota, and Norway. The course is designed to familiarize professionals: exploration geologists, mine planners, mine managers, regulators, environmental engineers, and mining consultants with geochemical processes that are likely to occur in un-mined material or that are currently taking place within mined materials.

The second course is an advanced course focusing on the tailings and waste rock hydrogeology and geochemistry: mineral reaction rates, modeling, matrix, micro and macro flow, analytical methods and reclamation/remediation.  The coarse has been tought in New Mexico, Norway and partly in Portugal.

MINERALOGY - LEACHABILITY, BHP-COPPER, TUCSON, ARIZONA

SARB has conducted detailed mineralogical and geochemical investigation for a possible in-situ leaching operation of porphyry copper-skarn mineralization. The work has included mineral observation of cores, microscopy, and x-ray diffraction analyses. Geochemical modeling along a flow path was performed to evaluate the leachability and leaching options from a geochemical viewpoint.

European Tailings and Waste Rock

The European Commission has been working on developing a Tailings and Waste Rock directive.  As a supporting document for this a sub-committee document the commission on Best Available Technology has been developed.  SARB has assisted LKAB in their input and critic to this document.

FJORD DISPOSAL ISSUES

Crew Mining Company, Vancouver, Canada has been working on developing a gold mine in Greenland, the Nalunaq deposit.  The gold will be leached from fine grained material and the waste left in tailings dams on shore or as fjord deposition.  SARB has been assisting Crew in evaluating the fjord deposition option, looking into other similar fjord deposition cases in Norway and designing long term in field leaching tests.
